The FCC has adopted a Notice of Inquiry as an early step in developing rules for next-generation 911 emergency communications services.  The FCC’s action occurs as the majority of 911 calls are now placed from mobile phones, while traditional governmental 911 response systems are landline-based and not equipped to handle text messages, video, or photos as are often available from mobile phones.  NG911 rules are likely at least a couple of years away.  (Notice of Inquiry, FCC 10-200, December 21, 2010)
